‘Centre Fiers et Forts’ (‘Proud and Strong’) is a centre for disadvantaged children in Tamesloht, a small town located just outside Marrakech. There are 600 children living in the area where, in the past 20 years, there has been an influx of rural families searching for a better life. However, work is still scarce and families suffer from various difficulties and obstacles. The poverty and helplessness of the parents has left the children to defend themselves on the streets.
The centre was established in 2004 by Mrs Dorine Eijkman (also known as Madou), a Dutch citizen who came to Morocco in 1964 with her family. The organization has come a long way since its birth, which first started in an old garage; now the centre has classrooms for educational support, living accommodation for those without homes, and work for the older children. Mathematics, Arabic and French are taught every morning, and in the afternoon sports, art, music and drama. There are 99 children in total at Centre Fiers et Forts, who have been given a chance to lead a normal life.
